What is Pallet Fulfillment?
Pallet fulfillment is the storage and distribution of inventory at the pallet level — handling full pallets, layers, and case quantities rather than individual units. It's the backbone of B2B logistics: wholesale distribution, retail replenishment, and bulk order processing.
Unlike e-commerce fulfillment optimized for single-unit picks, pallet fulfillment requires different infrastructure: pallet racking for vertical storage, forklifts for safe handling, dock doors for truck loading, and WMS systems that track inventory at the pallet level.
Brands shipping to retailers, distributors, or wholesale accounts need a 3PL partner with pallet fulfillment capabilities. We receive containers, store pallets efficiently, pick at whatever level you need, and ship compliant loads to any destination.
Pallet vs Case Pack vs Each Picking
Understanding the difference between pick levels helps you choose the right fulfillment model:
- Pallet Picking: Full pallets shipped to a single destination — wholesale accounts, distribution centers, retail backrooms
- Layer Picking: Partial pallets picked by layer — flexible quantities between full pallet and case level
- Case Pack Picking: Individual cases picked from pallets — retail store orders, mixed-SKU shipments
- Each Picking: Individual units picked from cases — e-commerce, consumer orders
Most B2B operations need multiple pick levels. A large wholesale account gets full pallets. A regional retailer gets case quantities. An e-commerce order gets individual units. We handle all levels from the same inventory pool.
Container Receiving & Devanning
International shipments often arrive in containers — either palletized (goods on pallets inside the container) or floor-loaded (loose cartons stacked without pallets). We handle both:
- Palletized Containers: Unload pallets, verify counts, inspect condition, put away to racking
- Floor-Loaded Containers: Unload loose cartons, build pallets to spec, wrap and label, put away
- Mixed Containers: Some pallets, some loose — we sort and organize
Floor-loaded containers take longer to process but often ship at lower freight rates. We charge per container for devanning, with rates based on carton count and whether palletization is required.
Pallet Storage Options
Our facility offers multiple pallet storage configurations to optimize space and accessibility:
- Selective Racking: Single-deep positions with direct access to every pallet — ideal for diverse SKUs
- Deep-Lane Racking: Multiple pallets deep (2-4 positions) — efficient for high-velocity SKUs with large quantities
- Floor Storage: Pallets stacked on floor — for oversized, heavy, or non-standard pallets
- Block Stacking: Pallets stacked vertically without racking — maximizes density for stable, stackable goods
Storage is priced per pallet position per month. We'll recommend the optimal configuration based on your SKU count, velocity, and pallet characteristics.
Case Pack Fulfillment
Case pack fulfillment handles inventory at the case (carton) level rather than individual units. It's the standard for B2B retail distribution:
- Inner/Outer Cases: Products packed in inner cases within outer cases — we pick at either level
- Mixed-SKU Pallets: Build pallets with multiple products for store deliveries
- Pre-Ticketed Goods: Apply price tickets and retail labels before case packing
- Retailer Compliance: Pack and label per retailer specifications
Case pack fulfillment bridges the gap between full-pallet wholesale and unit-level e-commerce. It's how consumer goods reach retail shelves.
Retailer Pallet Requirements
Major retailers have strict pallet specifications that must be followed to avoid chargebacks:
- Pallet Dimensions: Most require standard 48x40" GMA pallets
- Weight Limits: Maximum pallet weight varies by retailer (typically 2,000-2,500 lbs)
- Height Limits: Maximum stack height (typically 48-60" including pallet)
- Stacking Pattern: How cases are arranged — interlocked, columnar, or brick
- Wrapping: Stretch wrap requirements — clear, opaque, color-coded
- Labeling: GS1-128 pallet labels in specific positions
We maintain current specifications for Walmart, Target, Costco, Amazon, Kroger, and regional retailers. Pallets are built to spec every time.
