What is Wholesale Fulfillment?
Wholesale fulfillment is the storage and distribution of goods to business buyers — retailers, distributors, and resellers who purchase in bulk and resell to consumers or other businesses. It's the B2B side of the supply chain.
Unlike D2C (direct-to-consumer) fulfillment that ships individual units to end customers, wholesale fulfillment handles larger order quantities (cases and pallets), business documentation (purchase orders, invoices, packing slips), and often compliance requirements from receiving businesses.
A wholesale 3PL partner provides the infrastructure and expertise to manage B2B distribution efficiently — receiving bulk inventory, storing at scale, processing wholesale orders, and shipping compliant loads to your buyers.
Wholesale vs Retail vs D2C Fulfillment
Understanding the different fulfillment models helps you choose the right partner:
- Wholesale Fulfillment: Shipping bulk quantities to businesses — distributors, resellers, wholesale accounts
- Retail Fulfillment: Shipping to retail stores or DCs with compliance requirements — routing guides, EDI, specific labels
- D2C Fulfillment: Shipping individual orders to end consumers — e-commerce, subscription boxes
Many brands need all three. We support omnichannel fulfillment — the same inventory serves wholesale accounts, retail partners, and e-commerce customers from one location.
B2B Order Processing
Wholesale orders arrive through different channels, and we handle them all:
- EDI Orders: Electronic purchase orders from major retailers via SPS Commerce integration
- Portal Orders: Your wholesale buyers place orders through our B2B Storefront
- Manual Orders: You enter POs from email, phone, or other channels
- Marketplace Orders: Wholesale platforms like Faire and Abound
Orders are validated against inventory, allocated to prevent overselling, and queued for picking. Our WMS tracks every order from receipt through delivery.
Case & Pallet Fulfillment
Wholesale orders are measured in cases and pallets, not individual units:
- Full Pallet Orders: Large wholesale accounts receiving complete pallets of product
- Case Quantity Orders: Mixed-SKU orders picked by the case for smaller accounts
- Mixed Pallets: Building pallets with multiple SKUs for store deliveries
- Layer Picks: Partial pallet quantities for flexible ordering
We pick at whatever level your buyers need — full pallets for distribution centers, cases for retail stores, layers for medium accounts.
Wholesale Compliance
Large wholesale buyers have specific requirements that must be met:
- Labeling: GS1-128 carton and pallet labels with correct data
- Packaging: Carton sizes, pallet configurations, wrapping specifications
- Documentation: Packing slips, BOLs, compliance certificates
- EDI: ASN (856) transmission before shipment arrives
- Delivery: Appointment scheduling, OTIF compliance
Non-compliance results in chargebacks — fees deducted from your payment. We handle compliance requirements for all major retailers and can adapt to your specific buyer requirements.
Omnichannel Distribution
Modern brands sell through multiple channels simultaneously. Omnichannel fulfillment means serving all channels from one inventory pool:
- Wholesale: Case and pallet orders to distributors and resellers
- Retail: Compliant shipments to major retailers
- E-Commerce: Individual unit orders to consumers
- Amazon: FBA shipments and Seller Fulfilled orders
- Marketplaces: Faire, TikTok Shop, and other platforms
Our WMS manages inventory allocation across channels, preventing overselling while maximizing availability. You get unified visibility across all your distribution.
