Walmart is the largest retailer in the world. Becoming a Walmart vendor opens enormous distribution potential — and exposes you to the most rigorous supplier compliance program in retail. Compliance failures cost real money. OTIF penalties run 3% of invoice value. SQEP violations carry fixed per-occurrence fees. ASN errors trigger automatic chargebacks. For mid-sized vendors, a 3-5% chargeback rate can wipe out an entire year of profit growth.

Walmart-specific compliance isn't optional, isn't negotiable, and isn't going away. The vendors who win at Walmart are the ones who treat compliance as a core operational discipline, not an afterthought.

The Walmart EDI suite

Walmart's EDI infrastructure runs on standard X12 transactions but with Walmart-specific implementation details:

• EDI 850 (PO): Inbound from Walmart. Contains line items, ship-to DC, requested delivery window, MABD date, routing instructions.
• EDI 856 (ASN): Outbound to Walmart. Critical document. Must transmit before delivery with full carton-level detail, GS1-128 SSCC labels, and accurate counts. Late or inaccurate 856 = automatic chargeback.
• EDI 810 (Invoice): Outbound to Walmart. Bills for shipped goods. Must match ASN data exactly. Mismatches trigger short-pays.
• EDI 753/754 (Routing Request/Confirmation): Used when Walmart provides routing instructions and you confirm carrier/pickup details.

OTIF — the metric that matters most

OTIF (On-Time In-Full) is Walmart's primary supplier scorecard metric. It measures whether your shipment arrives at the assigned Walmart DC within the MABD window with all units ordered. Two failure modes:

• Not On-Time: Delivery outside the MABD window. Even one day late counts as a failure.
• Not In-Full: Short shipment, partial delivery, or units missing. Even one short unit counts.

Walmart's threshold is 98% OTIF for Tier 1 suppliers. Below threshold triggers 3% penalty on the invoice value of non-compliant shipments. Common causes of OTIF failure: carrier delays (most common), shipping cutoff misses, inventory shortages at time of order, incorrect counts shipped, and customs/port delays for import-dependent inventory.

SQEP — the Supplier Quality Excellence Program

SQEP is Walmart's program for ASN accuracy and physical compliance. Violations include:

• Incorrect ASN data (carton count mismatch, wrong UPC, wrong pack sizes)
• Missing or incorrect GS1-128 SSCC labels
• Labels in wrong position on pallet or carton
• Pallet specification violations (height, weight, wrap)
• Incorrect stacking pattern for category
• Damaged packaging or product upon receipt

SQEP chargebacks are typically fixed fees per occurrence ($25-$500 depending on violation type) rather than percentage-based. They add up fast for vendors without operational discipline.

Walmart Vendor Central vs Marketplace

Two different Walmart relationships with different fulfillment models:

• Walmart Vendor Central (1P): Walmart buys inventory from you wholesale and resells through stores or Walmart.com. You ship to Walmart DCs against POs. Higher volume, lower margin per unit, more compliance requirements. Best for established brands with retail experience.
• Walmart Marketplace (3P): You sell directly to customers through Walmart.com. You maintain inventory ownership. Fulfillment options: Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS — like Amazon FBA for Walmart), or seller-fulfilled (you ship from your warehouse). Better margins per unit but customer-facing operational responsibility.

Many brands run both — Vendor Central for store distribution and major .com volume, Marketplace for niche SKUs or test products. We support both fulfillment models from the same inventory pool.

WFS prep services

Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS) requires specific prep work similar to Amazon FBA: WFS-compliant labeling, packaging requirements, inbound shipment plans, and Walmart-managed appointment scheduling. We prep WFS inbound shipments alongside Amazon FBA prep — many clients use both fulfillment models.
